Mahasiddha Tilopa is depicted here cradling a silver-hued fish in his arm. The fins of the fish caress his finger with great trust and kinship that points to the transformative power of Mahamudra practice – which acts to prevent the thoughts of our mind from darting after objects of the senses, like errant fish. As the practitioner’s thoughts are brought to rest a series of transitions occur, lifting us out of our current state and placing us instead in the magical realm that is simply the ease and freedom of the Guru’s mind.
