Freedoms and Endowments – Soyolmaa Davaakhuu

“My parents used to make many traditional appliques together. Dad would draw the original sketches and mum would do the sewing. I learned how to make applique by helping my parents when I was young. I have made traditional thangka appliques in the past by myself but this applique is the very first big work based on my own painting and mixes the old tradition with a new modern and free style.
Since there is no sewing machine which can be used for traditional appliques this time consuming art is handmade piece by piece using the best quality silk and put together later.
For this work I used bright colours to express the joy and faith of people who, being born in a place where Dharma has flourished, are taking the essence of their meaningful human life by going for refuge to the Buddha Jewel.
The eight freedoms and ten endowments in the Buddhist scriptures teaches us how extremely rare it is to take a human rebirth and how yet even more precious it is to be free to practice Dharma and be bestowed with endowments to meet the Buddha.”
150 x 200 cm, applique, 2018.
